Root Canal Treatment

Dr Herman will recommend a root canal treatment when there is infection in the nerve canals of your tooth or if there is nothing left of the tooth to build on and we need to rebuild the central part of the tooth with a post that will be used to support a reconstruction structure like a crown or a bridge2563bdd40769b00588e7a03ad2350df1-thumb

A root canal treatment is used to save the tooth when the dental pulp or nerve centre has become infected or has died. The cause of the infection is usually decay or a fractured tooth. Without treatment this infection will cause a dental abscess, swelling and infection of the jaw bone, with all the unpleasant pain associated with that

The only alternative to root canal treatment is to remove the tooth. It is always better to try to retain as much as possible from the natural tooth and then try to build on that with alternatives such as a denture, bridgework, or implants.

Root canal treatment is a relatively simple but rather time consuming procedure with little or no discomfort, as it needs the two to three treatments to ensure the infection has been cleared and the inflammation has been healed.

– How long will the restored tooth last?
With proper care your restored tooth can last a life time. You will be an integral part of the process with the need for good oral hygene and regular dental check ups to prevent and further problems.

– How will I know if the treatment is successful?
By using before and after X-Rays we can ascertain the success or failure of root canal treatment. We will be able to see if bone continues to be lost or has regenerated.
